Silk and Sword (Scions of the Underworld 1)

Silk and Sword by P.S. Scott is the first book in the Scions of the Underworld series. Lieutenant General Petronilla and Acelina, the proprietress of Duality, cannot stand each other. Patronilla hates everything Acelina embodies. But when they are forced to spend time together because of a military assignment, both realize that there might be hidden romantic feelings for each other.

I have very mixed feelings about this book. On one hand, I really liked it. It had romance, spice, some action and fantasy. On the other hand, the enemies in the enemies-to-lovers part was evil. They were downright cruel to each other. Hurting each other on purpose, making each other do things they were uncomfortable with. There was so much hatred. Other than that, the book had some pretty dark themes. Lots of talk about sex work, exploitation, rape and trauma. But the chemistry between both women was great after they got over their hating each other stage. They helped and respected each other. And just as a sidenote: I find their names quite weird.

And unfortunately, my edition had so many editing mistakes. Punctuation wasn’t right. There were gaps were no gaps should be. This made reading not that enjoyable.

This book was not a bad read. We had some ups and downs, but in the end, everything turned out fine. There are a few more stories in this series I might be interested in. We will see if I get back to this series in the future.
